Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid is an endogenous compound that has been found to be expressed in many types of human cancer cells. It is conjugated to a linker and then linked to a diagnostic agent. The linkage of the conjugates with the diagnostic agents can be accomplished by different methods, such as chemical reactions or recombinant DNA techniques. Thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid has been shown to bind to fibronectin type III domains on the surface of cancer cells and tumor vasculature. This binding leads to apoptosis induction and inhibition of tumor growth.
