Glutaconic acid is a carboxylic acid that inhibits the production of malonic acid by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme succinate dehydrogenase. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of ethylmalonic acid, which can be detected in urine. Glutaconic acid is used as a diagnostic test for diseases such as diabetic neuropathy and infectious diseases such as malaria. It also has inhibitory properties on glutamate-induced neuronal death, making it a potential therapeutic agent for conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.
