Milnacipran is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat chronic pain in the gastrointestinal tract. It blocks the action of serotonin and norepinephrine at their receptors, thereby having a beneficial effect on bowel disease. Milnacipran has been shown to be effective in reducing disease activity and improving quality of life in patients with chronic idiopathic constipation. The side effects of milnacipran are generally mild and transient, although it has been shown to cause cardiac arrythmias and serotonergic syndrome when taken with other drugs. The most common adverse effects are nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, somnolence, insomnia, sweating, diarrhea and asthenia.
