5-(2-Furyl)cyclohexane-1,3-dione (5FUd) is a chemotherapeutic agent that is used in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It is also used to diagnose and prognose this type of cancer. 5FUd works by inhibiting the activity of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs), which are enzymes that transfer methyl groups from S-adenosylmethionine to cytosine residues in DNA. This causes a decrease in DNA methylation and leads to cellular senescence and apoptosis. The effects of 5FUd on cell proliferation can be reversed by adding the compound dimethyl sulfoxide, which inhibits DNMT activity.
