MTBA is used in the protodeboronation reaction to convert 2-methylthiophene into 3-methylthiophene, which can be used for the synthesis of other chemicals. This compound can also be used to synthesize 3-methylthiophene from 3-methylthiophenol via the miyaura reaction.
