The compound can be prepared by the reaction of piperidine with 2-methylbenzothiazole followed by hydrolysis. This reaction produces a mixture of 2-methyl-4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-1,3-thiazolium chloride and 2-methylbenzothiazolium chloride.
