5-Chloro-2-methylbenzenethiol is a heterocyclic organic compound. It is synthesized from 2-hydroxymethylbenzene by the addition of aluminium chloride in an alkaline medium. 5-Chloro-2-methylbenzenethiol reacts with sodium to form 5-chloro-2-methylbenzene thiolate, which can be hydrolyzed to 5,5'-dichlorobenzene dithiol. The synthesis of this compound can also be achieved by the reaction of 2,5-dimethylphenol with phosphorus pentachloride and a halogen chloride. This compound has been used as a schistosomicide and as an intermediate in the synthesis of thioxanthones.
