Foscarbidopa is a prodrug of Carbidopa. It acts as a dopamine receptor agonist.

Carbidopa is a precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It is used in combination with levodopa to treat Parkinson's disease. Carbidopa-4-monophosphate has high water solubility and chemical stability, which makes it suitable for oral administration. The compound is converted into its active form by the enzyme dopa decarboxylase in the gastrointestinal tract. Carbidopa-4-monophosphate is a prodrug that provides an improved pharmacokinetic profile and tolerability compared to levodopa alone. This prodrug also minimizes the conversion of levodopa to dopamine, thereby reducing the incidence and severity of dyskinesias (involuntary movements). Clinical trials have shown that carbidopa-4-monophosphate improves both motor and nonmotor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease when given as a monotherapy or in combination with levodopa.
