1-Benzoyl-L-proline is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the class of tautomers. It is an isomeric mixture of two enantiomers, 1-(benzoyloxy)-L-proline and L-1-(benzoyloxy)-2-propenal, which are both active. 1-Benzoyl-L-proline has been shown to be effective against hyperproliferative diseases. It has also been shown to inhibit the production of amp-activated protein kinase by binding to its catalytic site, as well as cytosolic enzyme activity in vitro. This drug also inhibits chloride transport across the intestinal membrane and thus may be useful in treating autoimmune disorders related to bowel function.
