It has been shown to inhibit the growth of mouse mammary tumor cells (MCF-7) in vitro and in vivo. 19-Nor-4-androstenediol also inhibits the expression of genes that control cell proliferation, such as cdk2, cyclin A, and cdc25C. 19-Nor-4-androstenediol has been tested for its ability to bind to dna and is found to exhibit high affinity binding activity with calf thymus DNA. The protein sequence of this compound is not known but it is believed to interact with proteins by hydrophobic interactions or electrostatic interactions. 19-Nor-4-androstenediol was synthesized using sodium citrate as a reagent in the reaction mixture.
