Tetraphenylphosphonium chloride is used to generate lipophilic salts from inorganic and organometallic anions. Thus, Ph4P+ is useful as a phase-transfer catalyst, again because it allows inorganic anions to dissolve in organic solvents. Tetraphenylphosphonium Chloride is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the cell nuclei. It has been shown to be active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Tetraphenylphosphonium Chloride inhibits the synthesis of mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to the inhibition of enzyme activities in mitochondria. This allows for use as an anti-cancer drug by inhibiting tumour cell proliferation. Tetraphenylphosphonium Chloride also binds to DNA and alters its structure, preventing transcription and replication. The x-ray crystal structures show that this compound binds to the phosphate group in DNA and interacts with DNA bases through hydrogen bonding interactions.
