It is a substrate for recombinant human benzothiophene, menadione, and indazole reductase. The reaction catalyzed by methyl 5-methoxy-3-methyl-1-benzofuran-2-carboxylate includes the conversion of quinones to hydroquinones through the oxidation of a single electron. Methyl 5-methoxy-3-methyl-1benzofuran -2 carboxylate has been shown to upregulate the activity of benzisoxazole reductase in prostate cancer cells.
