It is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of dibenzofurans and catechols. 4,5-Dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid has been analyzed for its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria, including Salmonella and Listeria. The strain of bacteria is unknown. 4,5-Dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid can be found in chlorinated and dichlorinated water sources, as well as in congeners such as 2,4,6,-trichlorophenol.
