It is synthesized by reacting 2,6-dichloro 9-(2'-C-methyl beta D ribofuranosyl) 9H purine with methyl bromoacetate in the presence of sodium methoxide in methanol. 6-chloro 9-(2'-C-methyl beta D ribofuranosyl) 9H purine has antiviral activity against DNA and RNA viruses that are sensitive to it.
