The polymerization of this monomer is initiated by a free radical mechanism, which leads to a high degree of crosslinking between the chains and a low degree of water absorption. Tetramethylene glycol dimethacrylate has been shown to be non-toxic to cells in culture. The polymerization process can be controlled by the addition of an initiator, such as benzoyl peroxide or AIBN.
