It is thought to work by interfering with the production of DNA and RNA, which are vital for cell division. 4-Nitrophenyl isothiocyanate inhibits the activity of xanthine oxidase, an enzyme that produces uric acid from purines. This results in an accumulation of uric acid, which damages DNA. 4-Nitrophenyl isothiocyanate also inhibits the growth of human liver cancer cells by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins vital for cell division, such as carbon disulphide and hydrogen bond formation.
