Methyl 5-hydroxy-4-methoxy-2-nitrobenzoate is a reactive chemical that has been studied extensively because of its ability to induce apoptotic cell death in cancer cells. It is also able to induce apoptosis in other cells, such as the human erythrocytes. Methyl 5-hydroxy-4-methoxy-2-nitrobenzoate causes DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation, which are both hallmarks of apoptosis. The compound also binds to annexin V and induces cell death by binding to phosphatidylserine on the surface of the cell membrane and inducing endocytosis.
