2-(Chloromethyl)-3-trifluoromethylpyridine is an electrophilic reagent that is used in the chlorination of organic solvents. It has shown selectivity in the chlorinating of aromatic and aliphatic amines, aldehydes, nitro compounds, N-substituted pyridines, and other nitrogen containing substrates. This compound reacts with n-hydroxysuccinimide and benzotriazole to form a reactive intermediate that undergoes electrophilic substitution under mild conditions. The reaction time for this compound is approximately 30 minutes. 2-(Chloromethyl)-3-trifluoromethylpyridine is also used as a reagent in industrial large-scale production of chloroform.
