1-Phenyl-2-(trimethylsilyl)acetylene is a molecule that has been shown to be reactive in the presence of acid catalysts. This compound is similar to alkynylsilanes, which are compounds that have been shown to be reactive with copper chloride. The reaction mechanism of 1-phenyl-2-(trimethylsilyl)acetylene with copper chloride is not well understood, but it may involve the formation of an alkoxide intermediate. The reaction products are mainly silicon and a carbonyl group. Because of the nature of this mechanism, 1-phenyl-2-(trimethylsilyl)acetylene is not used for medicinal purposes and may be harmful if swallowed.
