Tofisopam has a half-life of 17 hours and is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes into 2 metabolites: alpha-hydroxytofisopam and beta-hydroxytofisopam. Tofisopam binds to GABA receptors that are found on neurons in the brain, which helps relieve anxiety. Tofisopam also inhibits inhibitory proteins such as N-type calcium channels, which leads to an increase in excitability in brain cells.
