The reaction mechanism of this reaction can be broken down into two stages: an initiation stage and a propagation stage. In the initiation stage, the aluminum sec-butoxide complex is formed through the attack of water on the butoxide ligand. This complex then reacts with more water to form aluminum hydroxide. In the propagation stage, each molecule of aluminum hydroxide will react with another molecule of water to form two molecules of hydrogen gas and one molecule of aluminum hydroxide.
