1-Butyl-2,3-dimethyl-imidazoliumhexafluorophoshate is a cationic surfactant that has been shown to be an efficient method for the removal of organic contaminants from wastewater. It can also be used as a carrier for other chemicals in analytical methods. The alkyl substituents on this molecule are important for its efficiency as a surfactant. The chloride group interacts with the water to form hydrochloric acid, which lowers the pH and increases the solubility of many organic compounds in the water. 1-Butyl-2,3-dimethyl-imidazoliumhexafluorophoshate is soluble in lipids and can interact with red cell membranes. It is also able to bind to proteins and form stable micelles. This surfactant is mesoporous, meaning it has pores that are larger than 2 nm but smaller than 100 nm in diameter.
