It has also been found to be an effective treatment for adrenocortical carcinoma in women and cervical cancer in women with chronic schizophrenia. 5-Androsten-3a-ol-17-one binds as a hydrogen bond donor to the receptor site on gland cells, and has been shown to increase the concentration of adenine nucleotides in the cells. This hormone is an agonist of the steroid receptors, which are located in the cytosol of cells. 5-Androsten-3a-ol-17 one is hydrophobic and soluble in lipids, and it can be used as a precursor in synthesis of fatty acids or hydroxyl groups.
