CAS:Alternariol-9-methyl ether is a natural compound that has been shown to have significant cytotoxic effects on murine hepatoma cells. This compound also synergizes with anti-retroviral drugs and has been found to be capable of inducing apoptosis in HIV-infected T cells at low concentrations. Alternariol-9-methyl ether is structurally related to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as alternariol, which are only weakly toxic to mice but are potent pro-apoptotic proteins when bound covalently to DNA. Structural analysis of this compound revealed that it inhibits the binding of a pro-apoptotic protein (Bid) to its target site on dsDNA, preventing Bid from initiating apoptosis.
