CAS:N,N-Diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD) is a solvent that has been traditionally used as an organic solvent for the synthesis of other chemicals. DPD is also used in the production of estrogenic compounds and devices, such as contraceptives and prosthetic devices. DPD is not efficient for use in cyclic transfer reactions, and its solubility in water is low. However, it does have high efficiency in electropolymerization reactions. The sodium salt of DPD can be synthesized by reacting acetonitrile with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide at temperatures below 140°C. This salt is soluble in water but not in alcohols. The neutral form of DPD cannot be obtained from this salt because it will undergo hydrolysis to form the acidic form or the basic form depending on the pH of the solution.
