5-(tert-Butyl)pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme MAO, which is involved in the metabolism of monoamines. It has been shown to be active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. This compound also inhibits the growth of plants such as Silybum marianum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. 5-(tert-Butyl)pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit MAO activity in vitro and in vivo using calf thymus DNA as substrate. The chemical structure of this compound is similar to that of other MAO inhibitors, with a pyrazine ring bound to a carboxylic acid group.
