2-Picolinic acid methyl ester is a synthetic compound that has been shown to inhibit the integrase enzyme, which is needed for the HIV virus to infect cells. It also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the amide nitrogen atoms of the peptide bond. 2-Picolinic acid methyl ester is an amide derivative of picolinic acid, a 5-membered heteroaryl that contains two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The asymmetric synthesis of 2-picolinic acid methyl ester can be accomplished with a Suzuki coupling reaction, which uses palladium as a catalyst. This compound can be used for analytical methods such as proton NMR and mass spectroscopy.
