Methylnitroacetate is a nitroalkane that is used in the synthesis of 6-nitroquinoline. It is an organic compound that has been shown to cause eye disorders. Methylnitroacetate is also a nitrate ester, which can be converted to nitrite ion and hypoxic tumor formation. The reaction mechanism for methylnitroacetate involves proton transfer with the nitrate ion, forming an inorganic acid.

Methyl nitroacetate is used in the synthesis of aromatic and heteroaromatic linear (E)-alfa-nitro-arylpentenoates. It is also used to prepare phenyliodonium ylide.
