4-Bromo-DL-tryptophan is a chemical compound that is used in research as a potential treatment for schizophrenia and depression. It has demonstrated anti-depressant properties by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, while also demonstrating an ability to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia by blocking dopamine receptors. This drug has been shown to have no effect on GABA receptors and therefore does not have any sedative effects. 4-Bromo-DL-tryptophan is metabolized by the body into various metabolites, including 4-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (4HTP), which can be converted into serotonin in the brain. The optimum dose for this drug is not known at this time, but it has been found that doses over 5 grams per day are toxic and should be avoided.
