Scandium chloride hydrate has a low toxicity, but reacts violently with strong oxidizing agents such as nitric acid or perchloric acid. Scandium chloride hydrate can be used to produce other compounds such as zirconium and zirconium oxide by heating it with hydrochloric acid or ammonium nitrate.
