Sevoflurane is an inhalational anaesthetic that has been used in human anaesthesia for many years. It is a fluorinated hydrocarbon and belongs to the class of ethers. The compound is prepared by chlorinating 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane with hydrofluoric acid. This reaction requires a transfer catalyst (e.g., paraformaldehyde) and anhydrous conditions. The product can be purified by vacuum distillation and reacts with fluoride ions to form stable chlorofluoromethyl ethers. These chlorofluoromethyl ethers are cocatalysts for the synthesis of other organic compounds such as hexafluoroacetone or hexafluoroethanol.
