It reacts with the alkoxide ion to form an intermediate alkoxide radical, which then reacts with the oxidized compound to form a new organic product. 2,5-Dichloro-3,6-dimethylpyrazine reacts with chlorinated compounds such as trifluoroperacetic acid and chlorine gas to produce dichloromethyltrifluoroperacetic acid and dichloromethylchlorocarbanilic acid respectively.
