CAS:4,6-Dimethylisophthalic acid is a modular molecule that can be used in the synthesis of a variety of compounds. It is soluble in water and acetone and has been shown to react with ethyl acetate to form esters, which can be used as building blocks for other reactions. The conformational properties of 4,6-dimethylisophthalic acid have been investigated by computer simulation and experiment. The results show that the molecule can adopt two different configurations: one where the methyl group is on the same side of the phenyl group and another where it is on opposite sides. This property simplifies synthesis because only one configuration needs to be prepared for a reaction. 4,6-Dimethylisophthalic acid has been used as an encapsulating agent for palladium particles in order to facilitate its use in cyclocondensation reactions.
