It reacts with anions to form hydrogen bonds, which are the driving force for its inhibitory effect. 1H-Benzotriazole-1-methanol has been shown to inhibit the rate of reaction of β-unsaturated ketones with aryl halides. It also has electrochemical properties that make it suitable for use in potentiodynamic polarization experiments.
