2,6-Dimethylphenyl isocyanate

2-Isocyanato-1,3-dimethylbenzene is an isomer of 2-isocyanato-4-(methylthio)benzene. It has a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms in wastewater. The protonation of 2-isocyanato-1,3-dimethylbenzene changes its color from yellow to dark brown. This compound can be used as a catalyst in salt metathesis reactions to synthesize pyridinium salts or carbodiimides. It also has potential use as a polymer for insoluble polymer synthesis, hydrocarbon solvent for synthetic chemistry, and crystallography. 2-Isocyanato-1,3-dimethylbenzene is also used in the synthesis of certain metal complexes with molybdenum or chloride ions.
