N-Propionyl-L-cysteine is a prodrug of L-cysteine that is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. N-Propionyl-L-cysteine is an antioxidant that can protect cells from oxidative stress, which can lead to diseases such as cancer and heart disease. It also has been shown to be cardioprotective in animals. In addition, N-Propionyl-L-cysteine has been found to have antihypertensive effects by increasing nitric oxide production and decreasing angiotensin II levels. This drug also reduces the accumulation of fatty acids in the myocardium, leading to increased uptake of beta oxidation products and reduced cardiac injury after ischemia reperfusion injury.
