Imidazole trifluoromethanesulfonate has been shown to reduce the production of hydrogen peroxide in the brain and prevent oxidative damage to DNA. This drug prevents the synthesis of imidazoline, which may be responsible for its effects on blood pressure and heart rate. Imidazole trifluoromethanesulfonate is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes into a protonated form that can bind to viral polymerase and inhibit DNA synthesis.
