Sodium ethylenesulphonate is a biocompatible polymer that is used as a scaffold for the growth of cells. It has been shown to be biocompatible with cells in culture and has been used as a scaffold to help regenerate tissue in animals. Sodium ethylenesulphonate has been shown to have thermal expansion properties, which may be due to its protein genes. This polymer is not water-soluble, but can be dissolved in glycol ethers and other water-miscible solvents. The water permeability of this polymer is high, meaning it can be used for the delivery of drugs or other substances through the skin. Sodium ethylenesulphonate has also been shown to have electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) properties that are similar to those of natural polymers such as collagen.

Sodium vinylsulfonate is a useful reagent (monomer) for the formation of poly(anionic) polymers and copolymers. It is employed as a basic brightener and leveling agent in nickel baths.
