    CAS:
    Hexamethyltriethylenetetramine (HMTET) is an ionic polymer that has a high molecular weight, high solubility in water, and good thermal stability. It is used as a redox buffer and has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. HMTET is synthesized from the reaction of ammonia with formaldehyde and trimethylbenzene. This process can be used for the synthesis of polymers by cationic polymerization or radical polymerization. The monomer units of HMTET are amines, which can be modified to create other polymers with different properties. HMTET has been shown to be a potent antimicrobial peptide against mammalian cells and is able to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
