Chlorobenzene-d5 has been used in the analysis of solutes in the environment, detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and identification of unknown substances. The usefulness of chlorobenzene-d5 as a reference material is due to its stability and high abundance in nature. A study investigating the health effects associated with exposure to chlorobenzene-d5 found that symptoms were limited to skin irritation at concentrations above 2%. The majority of cases were found among workers who had not followed proper safety precautions or who had been exposed to high levels from spills or leaks.
