N-(4-(5-Mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)phenyl)hydrazinecarbothioamide is a neurotrophic factor that has been shown to be neuroprotective in vitro. It stimulates the production of neurotrophic factors, such as brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and also prevents mitochondrial membrane potential from decreasing. It has been shown to improve locomotor activity and rotarod test performance in rats. N-(4-(5-Mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)phenyl)hydrazinecarbothioamide also possesses pharmacokinetic properties and can be detected by electrochemical detector systems. This drug is currently being studied for its ability to enhance dopamine release in the brain.
