CAS 321-07-3: 1-Phenyl-3-trifluoromethyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one

1-Phenyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyrazolin-5-one (1) is a polyester with the chemical formula C13H10F3O4. It has been synthesized by refluxing 1,3-diphenylpropane diol (2) with 3,4,5-trichlorobenzaldehyde in the presence of potassium carbonate. The reaction yields a yellow solid that is soluble in water and methanol. Elemental analysis data show that 1 contains 57% C, 17% H, and 18% O. Spectroscopic data shows that 1 has an IR absorption at 2953 cm-1 for its carbonyl group and a UV absorption maximum at 225 nm for its aromatic ring. 1 reacts well with nucleophiles such as ammonia or hydroxide ion to form amides or alcohols respectively.
