DMPA has been shown to be cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential and increasing oxidative stress. DMPA also has anti-cancer properties due to its ability to inhibit nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NFkB). The quinoid moiety of DMPA can undergo oxidation to form a radical cation that may be responsible for its toxicity.
