It blocks the synthesis of the amino acid L-isoleucine by binding to the enzyme IleS synthetase, which catalyzes the conversion of L-threonine to L-isoleucine in bacteria. The compound is a benzodiazepine receptor ligand that has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro and in vivo. Boc-L-isoleucine N-hydroxysuccinimide ester binds to the outer membrane of Gram negative bacteria and causes leakage from the cytoplasmic membrane, leading to cell death.
