3-Bromo-5-ethylbenzoic acid is a lead compound that is a non-selective inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 enzyme class. It inhibits both cyclooxygenases, COX-1 and COX-2. 3-Bromo-5-ethylbenzoic acid has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the COX enzymes in cells and tissues. This inhibition may be due to its binding to the active site of these enzymes and preventing access by the substrate. The lead compound has been detected using X-ray crystallography techniques. Motivated modifications were carried out to produce compounds that have improved pharmacophores with increased potency for inhibiting COX enzymes, as well as other medicinal properties.
