4-Methoxy-6-methylsalicylaldehyde is a synthetic aldehyde that has been used in the production of propionyl. It is an intermediate for formylation, hydroxylation and peroxidation reactions. The high-performance liquid chromatography technique was used to separate 4-methoxy-6-methylsalicylaldehyde from other aldehydes. The compound can be protonated by strong acids and can undergo silicone polymerization reactions. 4-Methoxy-6-methylsalicylaldehyde is also soluble in ethers, alcohols and esters. This class of compounds are usually found in lettuce leaves and have the characteristic phenolic odor.
