L-Tryptophan benzyl ester hydrochloride has a quinone structure that can be oxidized by alkali metals to form dione derivatives. The residue of the reaction is a benzylamine, which can be converted into the corresponding ester by treatment with acid. L-Tryptophan benzyl ester hydrochloride binds to DNA, inhibiting RNA synthesis and protein synthesis in bacteria.
