Tetra-n-butylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate is a reagent for the preparation of trifluoroacetic acid, which is an inorganic acid. Tetra-n-butylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate has been used as a model system for analytical chemistry studies. It can be used to estimate activation energies and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. Tetra-n-butylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate is also used in carbohydrate chemistry as a hydroxyl group activator and as an additive to carbonyl groups to form redox cycles. This reagent may also be used in bacterial vaginosis treatments, where it may help restore the vaginal flora by inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause infection.
