  • 2-(Methylsulfonyl)-1-phenylethanone

    CAS:
2-(Methylsulfonyl)-1-phenylethanone (TMPP) is the nitro and hydroxy group of a benzene ring. It is used as a growth regulator for plants, which may be due to its ability to inhibit plant cell division by binding to DNA. TMPP has been shown to cause mutations in calf thymus DNA, which can lead to cancer. TMPP is also used as a precursor for dyes and pharmaceutical drugs. The mechanism of this reaction is not well understood but it involves the formation of an alicyclic compound that contains two nitrogen atoms and a divalent hydrocarbon. This molecule then reacts with radiation or environmental pollution to form a bound form that traps the nitrogen atoms. These reactions are thought to be responsible for carcinogenic effects on cells, such as those found in hepatitis or liver cancer.
