It inhibits bacterial growth by cross-linking with amino acids and nucleic acids in the cell wall, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. 2,4,6-Trichloropyrimidine is also a cross-linking agent for polymers such as polyurethane and vinyl chloride. This compound has been shown to be effective against P. aeruginosa and other bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. 2,4,6-Trichloropyrimidine reacts with water vapor or oxygen nucleophiles to form hydrogen chloride and amine groups.
